My first visit to China was in 2013 as a guest of the Pingyao International Photo Festival. Since then I have visited this enthralling country another seven times, usually as a visitor to some of the many festivals of photography that dominate the cultural scene throughout China each year.

With each visit I continue to be amazed at the diversity of the visual landscape, the good nature of the people, the variety of the food, the smells and the social organisation that seemingly cuts through the chaos.

I have passed by this suite of derelict shops in Pingyao on my 5 visits to this ancient walled city, and photographed them on more than one occasion. This is the first time I have sat down in my digital darkroom and dedicated time to do them the justice of which they are so deserving.

As a footnote, this work is a slight departure for a photographer who is most comfortable shooting in a vertical format.
